RECOMMENDATION:
At the request of Mayor Howorth, staff recommends that City Council adopt Resolution No. 18-0054 supporting safe storage and disposal of prescription drugs.

BACKGROUND:
Behavioral Health Services (BHS) is part of the South Bay Communities Creating Change Coalition under the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health. The coalition of LA County Prevention Providers is requesting that the City of Manhattan Beach and other Service Planning Area (SPA 8) cities adopt a resolution to voice support for the safe storage and disposal of prescription drugs to protect our youth.
The cities of Redondo Beach and Hermosa Beach have adopted resolutions in support of the safe storage and disposal of expired or unused Rx-prescription drugs.
DISCUSSION:
Resolution No. 18-0054 expresses support for the Drug Enforcement Agency's bi-annual national prescription drug take back events. The National Prescription Drug Take Back addresses a vital public safety and public health issue. Medicines that languish in home cabinets are highly susceptible to diversion, misuse and abuse. Rates of prescription drug abuse in the U.S. are alarmingly high, as are the number of accidental poisonings and overdoses due to these drugs.
