RECOMMENDATION:
Staff recommends that the City Council recognize businesses that have been providing longstanding operations and services to the community for a number of years.
FISCAL IMPLICATIONS:
The cost of the plaques and certificates is approximately $1,900.
BACKGROUND:
City Council established an award program to recognize and applaud longstanding businesses that have continuously maintained a commercially-zoned premise, providing services to our community for many years.
On May 1, 2018, City Council updated the Longstanding Business Award Program by identifying five (5) incremental milestones recognizing 10, 25, 30, 40, and 50 years of continuous service.
More recently on September 9, 2021, City Council directed staff to expand the Program by including additional milestone years (5, 15 and 20 years) to the Longstanding Local Business Award Program.
Based on these recent changes to the Program, the City will be recognizing eight (8) incremental milestones with 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 40, and 50 years of continuous service in the community. Plaques will be awarded to businesses that achieve the 20, 25, 30, 40, and 50 year milestones, special proclamations will be presented to businesses with 15 and 10 years and certificates will be mailed to businesses with 5 years.
The table below shows the number of businesses receiving recognition under the new expanded milestones, followed by the previous 3 years under the former structure:
Year Plaques Proclamations Certificates Total
2021* 32 47 43 122
2020** 20 9 35 64
2019** 22 16 29 67

* The totals for 2021 are reflective of the 8 incremental milestones: 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 40, and 50 years.
** The totals for 2020 and prior are reflective of the 5 incremental milestones: 10, 25, 30, 40, and 50 years.
