RECOMMENDATION:
Staff recommends that the City Council discuss and provide direction on the relocation of Dragon Tales Sculpture Garden art piece.
FISCAL IMPLICATIONS:
Total estimated cost for the concrete work and installation is approximately $4,600. If relocation is directed, an allocation from the Public Arts Trust Fund will be required.
BACKGROUND:
At the October 1, 2019, City Council requested that alternate locations for the Dragon Tales sculpture garden art piece, currently located in Veterans Parkway at 2nd Street, be brought to the City Council for further discussion and evaluation.
The placement of the Dragon Tales sculpture garden art piece was recommended by the Cultural Arts Commission at their October 15, 2018, meeting and approved by the City Council at the December 18, 2018, meeting. This location was one of three new locations that were proposed. The other locations included Polliwog Park and Water Wise Park, where alternative sculpture garden pieces were placed.
Since the placement of the sculpture, staff has received feedback from residents and trail users, both positive and negative. Staff received e-mails from two nearby residents that would like the art piece moved. Staff also received phone calls and comments at the front desk in support of keeping the piece in the current location.
DISCUSSION:
Staff has reviewed the following alternate locations for the Dragon Tales sculpture for City Council consideration.
