FISCAL IMPLICATIONS:
The Fiscal Year 2019-2020 Adopted Budget provides for $1,500 in sponsorship funding toward the TEDxManhattanBeach event. Should City Council provide direction to increase the sponsorship amount to the $5,000 amount requested, the City Council must appropriate $3,500 from the General Fund unreserved fund balance.
BACKGROUND:
TEDxManhattanBeach is a community-organized event that features short, carefully prepared talks, demonstrations and performances that are idea-focused. The presentations cover a wide range of subjects to foster learning, inspiration and provoke important conversations. The event is typically held annually at Mira Costa High School in October and attendance reaches 500-1000 people. In order to ensure a multi-generational audience that reflects the Manhattan Beach community, the event places a high priority on accessibility and affordability by offering discounted tickets for older adults and high school students.
During the Fiscal Year 2019-2020 budget review process, the City Council reviewed budgeted expenditures in an effort to achieve budget savings. As part of those cuts, the City Council directed staff at the May 23, 2019, meeting to reduce the TEDx budgeted expenditure to $1,500. TEDx representatives were advised of the reduction at the time the budget was being adopted.
