The Los Angeles County Public Library held its 37th annual bookmark contest which began September 12, 2016. Students from the Manhattan Beach School District were invited to create a design based on this year's theme, “Read for the Fun of It!”

The contest challenges parents, educators, and librarians to introduce children to the Manhattan Beach Library.  The contest also introduces children to great literature and encourages the children to nurture the love of reading.

The Library collaborated with local school librarians and teachers to encourage student participation. This year there were 227 designs submitted from schools throughout the district.

Historically, the names of the Manhattan Beach Library Bookmark Contest Winners are listed in the staff report.  However, this year, staff has been notified that the winners are going to be selected at the November 10, 2016, Friends of the Library Board Meeting (a day after this agenda packet is posted and available to the public).  Therefore, when the winners are announced, staff will post a supplement of this staff report to the city’s website.

The Los Angeles County Public Library will also publish these winning bookmarks on their website and The Manhattan Beach Library will also print out the bookmark designs of local winners for patrons to enjoy beginning January 2017.

Winners from the following category will be announced at the November 15, 2016, City Council meeting:

K - 2nd Grade

3rd - 5th Grade

6th - 8th Grade

9th - 12th Grade
