Recommended Action
RECOMMENDATION:
Staff recommends that the City Council approve this affiliation agreement with The Regents of the University of California (UCLA) for the purpose of training paramedics.

There are no fiscal implications associated with the recommended action.

BACKGROUND:
The licensing and certification rules and regulations for paramedics as established by the Los Angeles County Department of Health Services EMS Agency (DHS) requires trainees to complete a course of study that includes experience in a field internship setting. The affiliation agreement between UCLA and the City of Manhattan Beach Fire Department would allow paramedic school trainees to ride with Manhattan Beach Fire Department paramedics for the purpose of receiving this field internship under the supervision of our experienced firefighter/paramedics.

DISCUSSION:
All paramedic school trainees must complete a two month long (20 shift) internship with an advanced life support (paramedic) unit prior to being licensed and certified as a paramedic. UCLA has requested the ability to assign some of their students to our Fire Department under the supervision of our experienced firefighter/paramedics.

The trainees will have completed the didactic (classroom) and clinical (hospital) portions of their education and training before coming here for this field internship with us. They will be assigned to one of our three shifts for mentoring and evaluation after each paramedic response.
