Recommended Action

RECOMMENDATION:

Receive report and approve the City Manager’s attendance and participation in the 2017 National League of Cities (NLC) City Summit Conference.

Body
FISCAL IMPLICATIONS:

The registration fee for the conference is $745.00. Ancillary travel costs, including airfare and three hotel night stays, may be accommodated in the City Manager’s Fiscal Year 2017-2018 line item budget for conferences and meetings.

BACKGROUND:

Once a year local leaders, both elected and staff, have a unique opportunity to join together to learn from experts and each other during NLC University Seminars and workshops sessions. Both seminars and workshop sessions provide opportunities to build technical and leadership skills.

DISCUSSION:

The National League of Cities will host their City Summit Conference in Charlotte, North Carolina November 15-18, 2017. I will be accompanying Councilmember Richard Montgomery, who is being considered for a leadership post, to explore the possibility of hosting a NLC event in our city in the future. In addition, at the conference, host mobile workshops around Charlotte will showcase real-world collaborative solutions to issues facing local government, and an abundance of conference workshop sessions with topics most relevant to the community. These topics include:

                     Economic Development

Technology and Data Uses for Cities

                     Sustainability

                     Leadership Skills

                     Workforce Support and Development

                     Infrastructure

                     Housing

                     Transportation and Alternatives

Cultural and Social Issues in the Community

CONCLUSION

After the conclusion of the conference, I will share the session highlights with the City Council and community at an upcoming meeting.
