RECOMMENDATION:
Staff recommends that the City Council discuss and provide direction on the 15 sculptures recommended by the Cultural Arts Commission to lease, purchase, or commission for the City.
FISCAL IMPLICATIONS:
There are no fiscal implications associated with the recommended action.
BACKGROUND:
At the March 7, 2023 meeting, City Council directed the Cultural Arts Commission (CAC) to develop a work plan of several items including researching and bringing forward 15 sculptures that are available to lease, purchase, or commission for the City. Staff worked with the CAC to identify a range of actively working artists who could be commissioned to create one-of-a-kind sculptures for Manhattan Beach as well as existing artworks that could be obtained on loan or purchased.
DISCUSSION:
Staff worked with CAC to identify possible locations where sculptural artwork could be installed. The following list was identified as the most viable locations currently available (see presentation for details):
* Civic Plaza A - Round fountain/planter in front of City Hall
* Civic Plaza B - Concrete pad in front of Police Department building (former location of the Puff of Wind sculpture)
* Civic Plaza C - Multi-square fountain/planter in the center of Civic Plaza
* Civic Plaza D - Square planter near chess board tables on south side of Civic Plaza
* Civic Plaza E - Lawn in front of library (County owned)
* Civic Plaza F - Planter/landscaping on south side of City Hall
