RECOMMENDATION:
Staff recommends that the City Council provide direction regarding a request by Councilmember Tell to agendize a discussion on possible City support for Freedom to Marry.
BACKGROUND:
At its 2009 annual meeting, the U.S. Conference of Mayors approved a resolution supporting marriage equality for same-sex couples, and the recognition and extension of full equal rights to such unions, including family and medical leave, tax equity, and insurance and retirement benefits, and opposed addition of language to the contrary into federal or state constitutions.
DISCUSSION:
During his mayoral term, Councilmember Tell supported this organization and he has requested the City Council consider agendizing a discussion on extending City support for Freedom to Marry.
CONCLUSION:
Staff recommends that the City Council provide direction regarding a request by Councilmember Tell to agendize a discussion on possible City support for Freedom to Marry.
